Mannheimer works in different forms and formats, but her profound interest in portraiture is constant. She excels in illuminating vastly different but always complex and multi-layered human lives.

MAN WITH DOVES

Documentary short (14´)
by Lina Maria Mannheimer
2021
In the middle of the iconic neighborhood around Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, known for its creativity and beauty, a fascinating daily art brut performance takes place. Thousands of pigeons migrate at sunset to the plaza in front of the museum to be fed and watered. A man merges with his flock of birds. Caring for a city’s most despised animals creates a lot of controversy. Man with Doves is a film about tenderness, disgust and, one might argue, fanatical devotion.

However they don’t give up on each-other, and a unique friendship emerges. Their filming allows us behind the social media - or any façade. We get to take part in two 20-year old’s uncensored thoughts about life’s challenges and relationships.
THE CEREMONY, THE CONTRACT and THE FIVE SENSES

Living in Paris, Mannheimer launched in 2009 her 5-year-long project that became the films The Ceremony, The Contract and The Five Senses. Love, friendship, dominance and submission are central themes as we meet the unusual and fascinating author Catherine Robbe-Grillet and her inner circle.

Catherine Robbe-Grillet, a sharp intellectual born in 1930, published her first book (L’image) in 1956. It was banned and publicly burned in Paris. After more than 50 years of exploring eroticism and the world of sadomasochism, Robbe-Grillet is today widely considered France’s most famous dominatrix.

The Ceremony, The Contract and The Five Senses take us far beyond the prejudiced, simplistic and cliché-ridden perceptions of sadomasochism. S/M may be a central theme of the films, but not merely as an exotic phenomenon. The issues raised here take us far beyond sexual orientation. The films delve into what motivates our decisions, not only those concerning desire and sexuality, but our behavior in general. Sadomasochist practices and codes serve simply as a magnifying glass through which we examine the driving forces that make us who we are.
